Pouch mashed potatoes whipped with real butter, warm milk, and a little sharp cheese. Ready in the time it takes the rest of dinner to rest.
3 pouches (4 oz each) Betty Crocker Mashed Potato Pouches (On Sale: 4/$5)
4 oz Cooper Sharp Cheese, shredded (On Sale: $5.99 lb)
6 tablespoons butter (On Sale: 2/$5)
1 cup milk, warmed (On Sale: $5.99)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Step 1: Bring the water called for on the pouches to a boil in a saucepan.
Step 2: Warm the milk gently in the microwave or a small pan while the water heats.
Step 3: Stir the butter into the boiling water until it melts completely.
Step 4: Take the pan off the heat and whisk in the potato pouches and the warm milk.
Step 5: Let it stand for 1 minute, then whisk hard for 30 seconds until fluffy.
Step 6: Fold in the shredded cheese and the black pepper.
Step 7: Scatter the chives over the top and serve hot.
Chef's Tip: Warm the milk before it goes in, because cold liquid seizes the starch and leaves you with a gluey texture. Whisk hard for thirty seconds once everything is in the pot and the potatoes turn genuinely fluffy. A handful of shredded sharp cheese and a crack of pepper covers the distance between a pouch and something made from scratch.
Save by using Stocking the pouches from the mix and match sale and finishing them with butter and milk from the refrigerator and Serve with A pool of gravy or the pan juices from a roast.
